Objective

Students are able to carry out organic chemistry syntheses on the basis of the instructions. S/he knows how to work in the organic laboratory, using a variety of equipment and methods.
S/he is able to apply his/her skills in physical chemistry when designing synthesis stages and investigating the properties of the final product.
The student masters how to use the IR- and MS-equipment and different sample techniques. The student is able to take advantage of spectroscopic data to identify synthesis products and unknown compounds and to determine the purity of the assay.
The student is able to report laboratory results in English.

Content

1. FTIR and GCMS-spectrometric measurements, operating principles of equipment, and various sample preparation techniques
2. IR- MS spectra interpretation
3. Designing of organic synthesis and implementation of the work instructions
4. Measurements of reaction kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics
5. Result reporting in English

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is actively involved in the project work. Each sub-project is completed and the results reported in accordance with the guidelines

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition, the student is able to plan and schedule the project activities and to carry out the plan in a goal-oriented way.
The student works with the group and, when necessary is able to re-organize the work.
The project has achieved its objectives.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition, the student prepares for the project work by studying a wide range of sources and schedules of the work in advance.
The project work is completed and the results are reported on schedule. The project has achieved its stated goals commendably.
