Objective

Students know the role of media and journalism as a social power. They know key mechanisms relating to the production and reception of media representations. They know the main theories related to the relationship of media and society. They know structures, activities and economical significance of media institutions as well as their relations to other institutions in society, and are able to assess critically the activities of the media. Students are capable of perceiving the social dimensions of their professional practice.

Further information

The course consists of independent group assingments in 5 person groups. Each group produces 45 min presentation based on a chapter in the book Mediayhteiskunta by Janne Seppänen & Esa Väliverronen. The presentations and related discussions will be held 3.-5.5. 2022.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students have acceptable participation in class and complete the assignments to a satisfactory standard. The students know concepts related to the production and reception of media representations, and to the relationship between the media and society. They have a general understanding of how the media institutions work and how they are related to the society. They can recognize connections between their professional activities and society at large.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students actively participate in class and complete the assignments to a good standard. The students have a versatile knowledge of the concepts and theories related to the production and reception of media representations, and to the relationship between the media and society. They are familiar with the strutctures, activities and economy of the media institutions, and with their relationship to the society. They can assess the social significance of their professional activities, as well as changes in their professional environment.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students actively participate in class and complete the assignments to an excellent standard. They have a comprehensive mastery of the concepts and theories related to the production and reception of media representations, and to the relationship between the media and society. They have excellent understanding of the structures, activities and economy of the media institutions, and with their relationship to the society. They can excellently assess the social significance of their professional activities, as well as changes in their professional environment.
