Objective
Students
- display midwifery skills of the normal and abnormal postpartum period
- are able to care for and counsel women who have given vaginal birth or who have had caesarean section and their families
- are familiar with convalescence after normal childbirth and can describe the contents and objectives of the postpartum examination
- manage to care for and observe a healthy newborn baby and are able to counsel parents with the care of their newborn baby
- identify changes in the wellbeing of the newborn baby requiring special attention and know how to proceed accordingly
- implement breastfeeding counselling according to the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative
- observe and support early interaction between parents and the newborn baby/babies
- understand the significance of preventative action and early intervention to the promotion of family health and wellbeing
Content
- Central contents related to midwifery skills during the postpartum period
- Recovering from normal childbirth and possible complications
- Midwifery care of women who have given vaginal birth or have had caesarean section
- Woman’s birth experience and delivery debriefing
- Health counselling and family-centered counselling in the postnatal ward
- Postnatal examination in accordance with the Health Insurance Act (1224/2004)
- Care and observation of a healthy newborn baby
- Common conditions requiring special attention and care of a newborn baby and resuscitation of a newborn baby
- Breastfeeding counselling according to the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative and nutritional issues of the newborn baby
- Early interaction and support methods
- Expert lectures on neonatology and parenthood psychology

Content scheduling
Precence at orientation, simulations, laborations and seminars are oblicatory. The exam is scheduled in the end of cource. Timetable for re-exams are scheduled during orientation lecture.
Students must confirm their attendance for a course implementation by being present when tuition begins or in another manner agreed with the lecturer. Students who are unable to attend the first teaching session due to illness may also confirm their attendance by informing the lecturer of this in advance.

Prerequisites
The student may choose professional studies in midwifery after having successfully completed the theoretical studies included in the professional studies of nursing as well as the clinical practices in the operating environments of medical and surgical nursing, unless otherwise agreed in student´s study plan.
