Objective
Students
- are familiar with the central care regulations and recommendations on childbirth
- can identify and solve ethical questions related to care during childbirth
- understand the principles and implementation of family- and client-oriented and culturally sensitive care in childbirth
- have competence to plan, implement, document and evaluate basic and obstetrical care in all stages of childbirth
- are familiar with and understand the stages and mechanism of normal childbirth
- are familiar with the birth process as well as the prenatal follow up and care methods of foetus
- are familiar with and can detect complications during childbirth and know how to handle these situations
- can detect foetal distress
- can monitor and care for the mother and her newborn baby immediately after the birth
- are familiar with nursing supporting pregnant women suffering from fear of childbirth
- can solve and analyze questions related to evidence-based midwifery during childbirth
Content
- Regulations and recommendations on care during childbirth
- Follow up and care of the mother and foetus during childbirth
- Normal childbirth and nursing skills related to it
- Evaluation and follow up methods of progress during childbirth
- Vacuum extraction and forceps delivery
- Follow up and care in case of emergency caesarean section
- Postpartum follow up and care of the mother and her newborn baby in delivery room
- Interaction promoting the resources of women giving birth and their families, parent-child relationship and positive childbirth experience
- Social, community-based and cultural factors related to midwifery skills of women giving birth and their families

The student may choose professional studies in midwifery after having successfully completed the theoretical studies included in the professional studies of nursing as well as the clinical practices in the operating environments of medical and surgical nursing, unless otherwise agreed in student´s study plan.
