Objective

Students are able to describe the aetiology, significance and main methods of treatment as well as pathogenetic mechanisms of podiatric disorders of diabetes. They are aware of the national programmes and guidelines for treating and preventing diabetes. Students can describe the problems caused by diabetes as well as complications, which are taken into consideration in podiatry.

Students are familiar with the content of the basic assessment of the feet and know how to implement the assessment. Students recognise a diabetic risk foot in order to examine it, provide education on the prevention of problems, arrange treatment and master the measurement of risk categorisation.They are able to describe the central principles of treating podiatric problems of diabetics and know how to give individual guidance on orthoses and therapeutic footwear.

Students are able to counsel clients on the self-care of feet. Students are familiar with the indications for use of the AV foot pump therapy and oxygen therapy and are able to recommend them to clients. They are acquainted with the Finnish Diabetes Association and its local associations and offer their expertise to the use of these associations if required. Students are familiar with the foot working groups and their activities.

Students are able to describe the pathogenesis, symptoms and therapeutic principles of key rheumatic diseases in terms of podiatry and understand the key joint and soft tissue changes relating to autoimmune disorders. Students gain practice examining rheumatic clients, in order to perceive the possibilities of podiatric treatments in their care. Students gain practice assessing individual client needs for custom-made orthotic insoles and orthopaedic footwear and preparing custom-made orthoses to meet an individual client’s needs. Students are familiar with the activities of the Finnish Rheumatism Association and local associations.

Students are able to perform the neurological and vascular examinations used in podiatry reliably and according to guidelines as well as know how to interpret the results of these examinations. Students are able to apply these examinations to defining the risk limb of the high risk patients as well as examining clients suffering from vascular problems and diseases.

Students are aware of the symptoms, clinical examination and basic treatment models of the most common neurological diseases prevalent in Finland as well as their prevention and present rehabilitation practices.

Students are able to describe the pathogenesis, healing and therapeutic principles of different types of wounds. Students know the current practices in wound care and are able to classify, document and assess the wounds that they have treated. In particular, students master the special issues and therapeutic principles of diabetic foot ulcers.
