Objective

Professional Swedish
Students acquire language skills governed by national legislation (352/2003 8§) required for both written and oral communication in Swedish in their professional duties. Students are able to communicate in the professional environment both in Finland and in other Nordic countries. They are able to take into account the cultural and linguistic aspects of other speakers in the communication situation. The minimum level for the written and spoken communication skills is B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students know how to search information from various sources and they can convey information in written form. Students who have completed their basic education in some other language than Finnish and who have been released from Swedish studies shall complete the Swedish part of studies by completing the course Finnish as Second and Foreign Language.

Advanced study of foot orthoses

Students deepen their customer skills in the production of foot orthoses. Students become acquainted with the digital work environments of prosthetics and orthotics and identify various methods and programmes used in the work environment. Students have an innovative and problem-oriented approach to their work. Students fluently use CAD / CAM technology in the production of orthoses. Students deepen their customer-oriented competences in the fabrication and assessment of foot orthoses.

Content

The content of the Professional Swedish course is determined by the degree programme or specialization option. The contents include oral and written exercises related to the following topics, which are relevant to each field of study:
• Self-assessment of language and communication skills and development of learning strategies
• Education and career
• Industry organizations, work environments, tasks, processes and tools
• Professional texts and the accumulation and activation of professional terminology
• Key interaction situations in the profession: individual and group communication

Advanced study of foot orthoses
• Manufacture of orthoses based on 3D technology
• Product manufacturing and service processes

Professional Swedish:
Second domestic language: In communication situations related to his/her field the student masters the most general and specialised professional communication situations. The student can write simple, partially non-uniform text. Errors may cause difficulties to understand, but they do not prevent the message from being conveyed. The student participates in simple interaction, but often needs support from other discussion partners. The student is familiar with the basic vocabulary of the field of expertise and general language, but inaccuracies and influence of other languages may interfere with conveying messages.
The student uses the most common basic structures in a monotonous, and partially incorrect manner. The student mainly pronounces correctly, although pronunciation differs from the target language and the slowness of the sentence rhythm makes the assessment of communication functionality difficult.

Professional Swedish:
Second domestic language: In communication situations related to his/her field the student masters reasonably well in everyday general and specialised professional communication situations. The student can compose coherent texts that successfully communicate the intended meaning and takes initiative in familiar professional communication situations. The student uses general and basic technical terminology of his/her own field relatively well. Lapses may occur in the choice of words or grammatical structures, but these do not cause misunderstanding. The student pronounces in an understandable manner, and the breaks in the sentence rhythm do not interfere with conveying messages.

Second domestic language: In communication situations related to his/her field the student masters well in diverse and challenging general and specialised professional communication situations. The student can produce clear and detailed texts appropriate for the situation. The student is an active participant in professional communication situations and adapts to the requirements of the situation. The student speaks fluently and effortlessly and takes the conversation partner into account. The student uses technical and general terminology as well as grammatical structures in a variety of ways and almost without errors. Pronounces clearly, with a natural sentence rhythm.
