Objective

On completion of the course the student will be able to participate in simple conversations, read and understand simple texts with the aid of a dictionary and write simple texts about familiar topics, for example his or her background, personal history and daily activities. The student’s communication skills correspond to the skill level A2.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Content

Oral and written communication in everyday contexts: speaking on the phone, talking about seasons and weather, spending time with friends, leisure time activities. New grammatical structures, for example expressing necessity and opinion, past tense. Basic features of colloquial Finnish. Features of the Finnish way of life.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to reply to questions in a simple conversation. The student is able to compose short and simple texts concerning everyday life. The student is able to identify expressions of necessity and opinion as well as past tense in familiar texts. The student knows some basic features about colloquial Finnish and the Finnish way of life.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to communicate understandably in a simple conversation in his or her turn, and he or she can even further the conversation for example by asking questions. The student is able to understand short texts concerning everyday life with the aid of a dictionary and to compose simple understandable texts on familiar topics. The student can apply familiar grammatical structures when instructed. The student understands some basic features of colloquial Finnish and of the Finnish way of life.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to participate in simple conversations concerning familiar everyday topics both as a listener and as a speaker and even to promote interaction. The student’s speech is fairly clear and understandable. The student is able to understand short texts concerning everyday life with the aid of a dictionary, even when the topic is not related to his or her immediate environment, and to compose understandable texts on familiar topics. The student is able to apply the grammar he or she has learnt to new words and expressions. The student expresses interest in colloquial Finnish and the Finnish way of life.

Assessment methods and criteria

To pass this course you have to do at least 80% of course.
