Objective

The student has mastered the analysis of melody, harmony, rhythm and form, and can produce these creatively in their chosen genre by writing, singing and with their own instrument, when applicable. The student is able to describe various styles of music in writing and orally using professional terminology of the field and is able to utilize technology in their work. The student is able to broaden their understanding of the field using the appropriate literature. The student knows how to search for knowledge and is able to work independently and creatively.

Content

The course has two components: theory and aural skills.

Theory:
- command of form and style
- command of the balance between melody and background elements
- demanding tonal (and post-tonal) harmonization and reharmonization
- familiarity with literature
- preparation and presentation of a sample project
Aural Skills:
- major and minor melodies with complex chromaticism
- two-part polyphony
- chord progressions with four-note and extended chords rich in chromaticism
- common scales
- melodic interpretation and improvisation exercises
- deviation from the key

Mupe 4 -opetus on tiistaisin kello 9-12:15 luokkahuoneessa AS513. Kevätlukukauden ensimmäinen tunti on 16.1.-24. Opettaja on Marko Puro.

The student is able to analyze melody, harmony, rhythm and form, and demonstrate this creatively on a professional level in their chosen musical genre by writing, singing and with their own instrument, when applicable. The student is able to describe various styles of music in writing and orally, communicate using the professional terminology of the field, utilize technology in their work and deepen their knowledge of the field through literature. The student knows how to search for knowledge independently and is able to work creatively.

Prerequisites

Fundamentals of Music for Professional Musicians 3 or equivalent knowledge and skills.

This is a compulsory course for all majors.
