Objective

On completion of the course the student will be able to introduce and tell someone about himself or herself or another person, ask simple questions and answer questions about familiar topics, use greetings and numbers, tell the time and tell location. The student’s communication skills correspond to the skill level A1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Content

Oral and written communication in simple everyday situations and daily routines: meeting people, eating and shopping. Key vocabulary. Basic grammatical structures, for example conjugating verbs in present tense, verb types, the partitive case and the six local cases. Finnish culture and customs.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to repeat a greeting and tell the very basics about himself or herself according to a given model. The student can repeat familiar sentences, form questions and answers according to a model, tell time when asked and, as a customer, identify the basic vocabulary concerning eating and shopping. The student is able to identify some verb forms, verb types and nominal cases in a short text. The student knows some basic features about the Finnish language and culture.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to reply to a greeting and tell basic things about himself or herself using different sentence structures. The student can, when instructed, apply familiar grammatical structures. He or she is able to tell time in a familiar context. The student is able to understand a simple, short dialog concerning eating and shopping. The student can ask and answer simple questions in familiar contexts. The student understands some basic features about the Finnish language and culture.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to take initiative in greeting and to apply familiar expressions and vocabulary to tell some more about himself or herself. The student can apply familiar grammatical structures to new contexts. The student is able to participate in a simple conversation concerning telling time, eating and shopping in a familiar situation or following given models. The student is able to ask and answer questions in simple and familiar everyday situations. The student expresses interest in the Finnish language and culture.

Assessment methods and criteria

To pass this course you have to do at least 80% of course.
