Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student can communicate in simple social contexts and in most common service situations. He/she understands the key points in short texts and can write short messages related to everyday matters. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A1.3 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).

Content

The course provides targeted support for the linguistic proficiency required for the basic level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency:
- focus on YKI themes: me and my background, home and living, everyday life, shopping and services
- practice in oral and written communication in different situations related to the YKI themes
- strengthening basic grammatical structures and vocabulary
- reading, listening and writing brief texts (personal data, shopping list, message, ad).

The combination of courses designed to target the YKI basic level A2 proficiency is:
- Finnish 1 (A1.2)
- YKI basic level exercises in Finnish 1 (A1.3)
- Finnish 2 (A1.3-A2.1)
- YKI basic level exercises in Finnish 2 (A2.1).

Prerequisites

Previous knowledge: skills level A1.2 of Finnish, e.g. Finnish 1 (A1.2) or the chapters 1-5 of the text book Suomen mestari 1

Teaching methods

Virtual learning in Zoom and independent studying in the Moodle.
In this course we practice specificly speaking and pronunciation.

15 November - 16 December
On Tuesdays at 8.30-10.00 and Fridays at 8.30-10.00.

The student's amount of work 54 h.

This Finnish as a second language course is targeted to all Metropolia degree students who have paid tuition fees.

Studying in this course requires a lot of independent work. Book time for independent studying on your calendar at least 5 h/week.

- find and understand some main points from short and familiar texts
- write some basic things about himself/herself and a very short message
- complete some YKI basic level exercises on the A1 proficiency level

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
- communicate in basic social encounters and most common service situations
- understand the key points of short texts
- write very short messages related to everyday matters
- complete YKI basic level exercises mainly on the A1 proficiency level

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
- apply the expressions and vocabulary he/she has learnt in simple social encounters and service situations
- acquire additional vocabulary he/she needs and use it in everyday situations
- apply the grammar he/she has learnt to new words and expressions
- understand and show interest in basic features of the Finnish language, culture and customs
- complete YKI basic level exercises consistently on the A1 proficiency level
- language proficiency in different contexts is at least on the level A1.3.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to

- find and understand some main points from short and familiar texts
- write some basic things about himself/herself and a very short message
- complete some YKI basic level exercises on the A1 proficiency level
