Study Guide

Objective

On completion of the course, the student will understand simple and clearly spoken Finnish in very familiar everyday situations. The student will be able to tell briefly about his/her background, home and daily routines and understand short texts about familiar topics. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A1.2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).

Content

- oral and written communication in simple everyday situations and daily routines: meeting and getting to know people, telling basic things about oneself, one's family and the course of the day, shopping
- basic grammatical structures, for example verb types, conjugating verbs in present tense, the partitive, the genitive, consonant gradation, possessive structures, asking questions
- key characteristics of spoken Finnish
- basic features of the Finnish culture and customs

Teaching methods

Teaching mainly face-to-face in Myllypuro campus. In addition, some online classes on Zoom and independent studying in Moodle.

Student workload

The student's amount of work 5 credits = 135 h
Face-to-face-teaching and Zoom meetings 50 h, homework and independent studying 85 h.

Further information

Good studying skills and a lot of independent work is required. Book time for independent studying on your calendar min. 8 h/week.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to
- tell basic things about himself/herself and about the course of the day
- understand similar information in the communication partner’s speech
- identify the verb types and verb conjugation in familiar texts
- identify nominal declension in familiar texts
- identify the consonant change in familiar words
- recognise some basic features about the Finnish language and culture.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
- tell about himself/herself in familiar everyday situations
- use some basic vocabulary both in speaking and in writing
- apply familiar grammatical structures according to given instructions
- understand some basic features about the Finnish language, culture and customs.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
- apply the expressions and vocabulary he/she has learnt to tell somewhat more extensively about himself/herself and to ask questions about the communication partner’s life
- acquire additional vocabulary and use it in everyday situations
- apply the grammar he/she has learnt to new words and expressions
- understand and show interest in basic features of the Finnish language, culture and customs.

The student is able to
- tell basic things about himself/herself and about the course of the day
- understand similar information in the communication partner’s speech
- identify the verb types and verb conjugation in familiar texts
- identify nominal declension in familiar texts
- identify the consonant change in familiar words
- recognise some basic features about the Finnish language and culture.
