Objective

The student is able to identify different materials used in veneered furniture, deterioration and causes for deterioration of veneered furniture. The student knows how different materials are taken into account in conservation. The student knows the procedure required for conservation of a specific piece of furniture. The student masters conservation documentation of furniture. The student knows the history of intarsia/marquetry/veneering and is able to identify the quality and techniques used, as well as surface treatments and materials and deterioration of veneered furniture. The student is able to fulfill conservation/restoration of veneered surfaces. The student is able to make conservation and restoration of surface treatments of these furniture. The student is able estimate the pros and cons of different conservation treatments and choose the right solution in order to preserve both the artefact and the information included in it.

Intarsia/marquetry; traditional techniques
Traditional veneering materials and history of use.
Conservation and restoration of veneered furniture.
Glues and surface treatments of veneered furniture.
History of veneered furniture.
Identification of wood, material analyzes.
Work safety and sustainable use of materials.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows the basic concepts and approaches of conservation of veneered furniture and surfaces. The student is familiar with the basic theory related to veneered furniture. The student knows materials and techniques used for conservation of veneered furniture and surfaces on a basic level. The student masters the basic skills required for conservation of veneered furniture. The student understands satisfactorily the content of the course and is able to apply the main methods. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has a good picture concerning challenges, theory, terminology and concepts related to conservation of veneered furniture and surfaces. The student shows good theoretical and practical knowledge and skills. The student is able to give reasons for his/her conservation approaches and practical work proceeds logically by following the established procedure in conservation. The student masters the course content both in theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The student has fulfilled the course assignments independently enough. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme and is able to analyze this data.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student masters the subject area of conservation and research of veneered furniture and surfaces and has achieved excellent level of knowledge and skills. The student shows excellent theoretical and practical knowledge and is able to apply her/his knowledge. The student is able to fulfill independently both written and practical assignments. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme and is able to analyze and apply this data. The student is able to discuss the course theme by using relevant terminology and concepts. The student is able to give reasons for his/her conservation choices and practical work proceeds logically by following the established procedure in conservation. The student works independently and shows self-motivation and creativity in problem solving.
