Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student will be able to understand the key points and some details of simple texts (short messages, notifications, ads and very short news). He/she will understand clearly spoken standard language about familiar topics and will manage simple social encounters in Finnish. The student is able to describe his/her everyday life with some sentences both orally and in writing. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A2.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Content
The course provides targeted support for the linguistic proficiency required for the basic level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI):
- focus on YKI themes: traveling, health and wellbeing, work
- practice in oral and written communication in different situations related to the YKI themes: reading and listening short messages and notifications, short news, announcements; practice in simple service situations such as buying tickets, asking and giving directions, making an appointment to the doctor; writing short texts (a message, note, simple description).
- strengthening basic grammatical structures and vocabulary.
The combination of courses designed to target the YKI basic level A1-A2 proficiency is:
- Finnish 1 (A1.2)
- YKI basic level exercises in Finnish 1 (A1.3)
- Finnish 2 (A1.3-A2.1)
- YKI basic level exercises in Finnish 2 (A2.1).
Prerequisites
Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A1.3/A2.1 level, e.g. the course Finnish 1 (A1.2) and at least partly Finnish 2 (A2.1).
Teaching methods
Virtual teaching in Zoom and independent studying in the Moodle.

On Mondays at 14-15.30 and on Wednesdays at 16-17.30.

- apply the expressions, grammatical structures and vocabulary he/she has learnt in simple situations and social encounters
- acquire additional vocabulary he/she needs and use it in everyday situations
- understand short texts about everyday life and conclude also some details frpm them
- show interest in basic features of the Finnish language, culture and customs
- complete YKI basic level exercises consistently on the A2.1 proficiency level.
