Learning outcomes
The student is generally familiar with the correct principles of storage, framing and hanging of paintings and has the ability to independently search for and obtain the necessary materials from various manufacturers:
• Storage facilities and secure storage
• Handling in connection with storage and exhibition / loans
• Hanging methods and materials
• Methods and suitable materials used in attaching the painting to the frame
• Strainers and stretchers, stretching a painting
• Re-modelling the frame aperture and rabbet cushioning
• Types of backing protection and backing materials for paintings
• Glazing of paintings
• Packing materials for paintings, packing and handling during transport
Content
Appropriate, safe storage, packaging, framing and hanging of traditional and modern paintings, made of different materials: in storage and exhibition situations, as well as in connection with transport.
Stretching of paintings, safe re-modelling of the frame, rabbet cushioning materials, backing protection materials and protection methods for paintings, glazing of paintings with glass and Plexiglas. Safe handling of paintings in connection with the storage, transport and exhibitions.
Procurement of framing and hanging accessories.

Student workload
The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 cr, which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies and independent work. 40 hours is formed from approx. 20- 22 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours are dedicated for independent literature survey or independent practical work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 26 study / practical work hours (h).
Content scheduling
Project work (restaurant Elite-s painting collection)
The paintings are packed at the restaurant Elite with the help of students under the guidance of a lecturer and transported to Metropolia's conservation facilities.
When the project is completed, the paintings will be packed again by students and transported back to the premises of restaurant Elite, where they will be hung in their former places.
All paintings are documented, cleaned and, if necessary, minor conservation and restoration operations are carried out.
During the project work, the obtained knowledge and skills are applied, using appropriate methods and materials for framing, hanging and storage of the paintings.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is based on continuous assessment of a student, attendance, participation at the project, practical exercises and their assessment. Each student is assessed from the starting point of her/his abilities.

The student is able to outline the correct principles of preservation / storage, framing and hanging of different types of paintings and knows at a basic level the related theory and materials. The student masters the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student is able to acquire information independently. The student has difficulty making informed choices independently and applying them to practical work. The student has difficulty acting as a group member in an encouraging and group-strengthening way.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student understands the correct principles of preservation / storage, framing and hanging of different types of paintings and knows the related theory and materials at a basic level. The student demonstrates a good theoretical and applied knowledge. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly, and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student masters the whole in both theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The work has been sufficiently independent. The student is able to acquire information independently and is able to critically analyse this information. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.

The student masters the correct principles of preservation / storage, framing and hanging of different types of paintings and has an excellent knowledge of the related theory and materials. The student demonstrates excellent theoretical and applied knowledge and is able to apply what he or she has learned well. The student is able to work largely independently on both written and skill-based assignments. The student is able to acquire information independently and to analyse and apply information. The student participates in the discussion with arguments using the concepts of the field. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student works consistently and independently, showing initiative and creative problem-solving ability. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.
