Objective

The student is able to work safely in laboratory taking into consideration personal work safety, risks caused by chemical compounds and waste disposal.
The student is able to name and draw formulas of chemical compounds and identify functional groups of molecules. The student understands how the chemical construction and solubility of non-polar and polar solvents differ from each other.

Content

Accurate and safe work in laboratory, safety data sheets, waste disposal.
Basic organic chemistry, constructions and functional groups. Characteristics and solubility of solvents.

Location and time

Possible virtual lectures are held via TEAMS.
Laboratory works are kept at Arabia campus, Hämeentie 135 D

Materials

Literature list and study hand out given by the lecturer.

Teaching methods

Tuition mostly in Finnish, lecture, contact teaching, guided assignments, laboratory works, independent work with literature.

Exam schedules

Tentti pidetään opintojakson lopussa. Tentin uusiminen on mahdollista erikseen järjestettävänä uusintatenttiajankohtana.

Student workload

The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 cr which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies. 40 hours is formed from approx. 23 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours is spent by independent literature survey or practical work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 26 hours (h).

Content scheduling

Kurssin alussa on luentoja ja tehtäviä, minkä jälkeen kurssi jatkuu laboratoriotyöskentelyn päivillä.
