Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student knows the basics of planning roads and knows how the planning progresses. The student knows legends and understands different kinds of plans and drawings. The student knows why detailed drawings are necessary and can choose the correct implementation methods. The student can supervise the implementation of a simple road construction project or its part independently according to the plans.

Content

1. Different types of designs
2. Background material for planning, environmental impact assessment and city planning
3. Planning process, and procedures for getting a building permit
4. Road structures (design and construction and BIM)
5. Rails, traffic signs and other structures related to roads
6. Construction on site based on plans
7. Regulations, permissions and implementation

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

On completion of the course the student
- is familiar with the planning process
- can choose the appropriate solution for designing
- knows how different types of basic structures function
- can supervise the construction of a simple road according to plans
- can plan temporary traffic arrangements
- knows the basics of legislation related to planning and construction in Finland.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student
- can plan a simple road construction project and make a realistic schedule for it
- manage planning or implementation of a typical road construction project
- knows the roles of the authorities in road construction projects
- can combine equipment and machinery needed in road construction.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- design alternative solutions and evaluate their functionality
- compare the costs of alternative solutions
- schedule planning and construction in an economically optimal timeframe
- understand the differences in the tasks of the developer and contractor and can evaluate matters from both points of view.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

On completion of the course the student
- is familiar with the planning process
- can choose the appropriate solution for designing
- knows how different types of basic structures function
- can supervise the construction of a simple road according to plans
- can plan temporary traffic arrangements
- knows the basics of legislation related to planning and construction in Finland.
