Objective
After completing the course, the students will be familiar with their physical and social learning environment and the requirements and rules of higher education. They recognise what internationality means in their field as well as opportunities for international exchange and internships. The students are able to outline the job opportunities in their field and the contents of their degree. The students are able to evaluate their learning, themselves as learners and their own strengths as students. They can set goals and make study plans for their studies.The students are able to write basic texts in their field, communicate in their field and apply language use recommendations. They are able to use essential office tools. The student knows the social significance of the construction industry, key companies, organisations and actors and the importance of sustainable development in construction. After completing the basic information security course, the student will be able to handle information appropriately, identify the most common information security threats and be prepared to meet the requirements of working life in terms of information security skills. After completing the basic course in artificial intelligence, the student will understand the principles of large language models and their advantages and disadvantages. They will be able to use AI in a responsible and ethical way in learning, taking responsibility for the content of their own work and following good scientific practice.
Content
• Orientation to the learning environment and the learning field, requirements and rules for higher education, degree regulations, curriculum, personal study plan (PSP) and recognition of prior learning (RPL)
• Key learning outcomes of the degree programme, developing one's own learning capacity, universities of applied sciences' study tools
• Higher education services, internationality, well-being services, library services and student organisations
• Technical language usage recommendations: report as a form of communication and text; structure and layout of a report, word processing and presentations
• Construction in society, company visits and trade fairs, key organisations in the field
• Occupational safety and health, sustainable development in construction
• Basic knowledge and skills in information security and data protection
• Training and critically evaluating your own AI model, understanding the underlying concepts of AI and its correct context of use
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student knows how to operate in Metropolia's learning environments in accordance with its policies, rules and guidelines. They recognise their own strengths as learners and know what systematic study means. The students know the study tools related to their studies and learn how to use them. The student takes part in field-specific events and becomes familiar with the key players in the real estate and construction industry, its fields of activity, and the basic rules and guidelines. The student knows the terminology of the field, how to obtain information and is able to prepare documents according to given instructions and models as well as apply language use recommendations. The student understands the importance of sustainable development in construction.
