Objective
After completing the course, the student
• is able to explain the effects of microstructure and macrostructure on the key mechanical and physical properties of a material
• is able to describe the effects of the key alloying elements of steels on the phase structure and properties of steels, and classify alloys and explain the differences in their properties and their suitability for different applications
• is able to evaluate the properties of ceramics and the reliability of test methods, use information on material properties to select materials for different engineering applications, and apply methods of materials research and testing.
