Objective
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to design and implement user-oriented assistive technology solutions taking into account the individual needs and functional capacity of the client. The student will be able to interview, examine and assess the client's orthotic needs and apply biomechanical principles to the measurement and fitting of orthoses. They will be able to customise orthoses for the foot and ankle using appropriate components and manufacturing techniques and to guide the client in the use of the orthosis.
The student will understand the cost structure of an assistive device solution and be able to apply evidence-based knowledge in the design, manufacture and evaluation of orthoses. They will be able to critically evaluate the different stages of the manufacturing process and their impact on the functionality of the orthosis and the well-being of the client.
Content
Students will deepen their knowledge in the following topics.
- Design and implementation of a user-centred assistive technology solution
- Examination and interview of the client and assessment of orthotic needs
- Biomechanical examination and measurement of the orthosis
- Customised foot and ankle orthoses
- Components and their selection
- Manufacturing process and techniques
