Conservation Documentation and Analytical PhotographyLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

The student understands why and how cultural heritage is catalogued, documented and contextualized.
The student is familiar with the written and photographic principles and methods of documenting, used in his / her own specialization in conservation and knows the practices and terminology, used in documentation.
The student is able to take high-quality research photographs, and process the images with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
The student understands the methods of documentation using analytical photography, the principles of X-ray imaging and its importance in the documentation and research in the field of conservation.
The student knows the basics of microscopy, the operating principles of microscopes and is able to apply microscopy in conservation research and documentation, for example by microscopic imaging methods.
The student is able to interpret documentary images obtained with the help of analytical photography, X-ray imaging and microscopic imaging.

Content

Principles, methods and terminology of documentation of one's specialization in conservation
Conservation photography in symmetrical daylight / analytical Photography, including side light / tangential light photography, UV Fluorescence, Infrared Reflectography and X-ray photography
Microscopy and microscopic imaging
Image processing tasks (Adobe Photoshop), Interpretation of obtained images and their use in documentation

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to outline the basic concepts of written, graphic and analytical photographic methods of documentation in his / her own field of conservation and is familiar with the related theory and practical work at a basic level. The student masters the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student understands the necessary theoretical and applied principles, related to the topic. The student is able to acquire information independently but there are serious shortcomings in the use of analytical photography equipment and interpretation of the acquired information.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has a good understanding of the basic ideas and concepts of documentation and analytical photography methods in their field of conservation and the practical work of analytical photography. The student demonstrates a good level of theoretical and applied knowledge. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student masters the whole in both theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The work has been sufficiently independent. The student is able to acquire information independently and is able to critically analyse and interpret this information.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student masters the documentation and analytical photography of his / her own field of conservation and has achieved an excellent level of knowledge and skills. The student demonstrates excellent knowledge of theoretical and applied knowledge and is able to apply what he or she has learned well in practical work. The student is able to work largely independently on both written and skill-based assignments. The student is able to acquire information independently and analyse and interpret information. The student participates in the discussion with arguments using the concepts of the field. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly, and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student works consistently and independently, showing initiative and creative problem-solving ability.

Further information

The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 cr, which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies and independent work. 40 hours is formed from approx. 20- 22 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours are dedicated for independent literature survey or independent practical work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 26 study / practical work hours (h).
