Objective

The student knows the key media forms in the audiovisual field and some of the main lines of their historical development. They understand the link between the current media environment and the history of media. They will be able to assess contemporary media phenomena in the light of historical contexts and will be familiar with the dynamics of media change and continuity.

- overview of the history of cinema and audiovisual media
- aesthetic, technical, economic and social aspects of media history
- cultural significance of the media
- future outlook and trends in the media

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student participates satisfactorily in class. The student is able to identify some of the stages in the development of media forms in their professional field. They are able to identify some similarities between historical media forms and the present.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student participates well in class. The student will be able to identify key stages in the history of media forms in their professional field, and to assess the relationship of contemporary media forms to history. They know the implications of the historical development of media forms for their profession. They are able to assess the current media environment from a historical perspective.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student participates in class with a high level of achievement. The student has an excellent knowledge of the history of media forms in their professional field, and is able to assess the relationship of current media forms to history in a comprehensive manner. They have an excellent knowledge of the implications of the historical development of media forms for their profession. They are able to assess the current media environment and its development prospects from a historical perspective and to recognise the relevance of what they have learned for their own professional practice.
