Objective

The student understands the importance of cleaning and its effect on the object to be conserved. He/she is able to apply the appropriate cleaning method and masters the correct working process. The student is familiar with various cleaning methods, materials and equipment. The student is able to choose suitable cleaning methods for different paper grades and object types and perform cleaning procedures.
The student will be acquainted with various structural conservation treatments used in paper conservation and is able to implement them using different methods. The student is able to cook paste and is familiar with other adhesives commonly used in paper conservation. The student knows the selection criteria for the conservation materials.

Content

Cleaning of paper, cleaning methods and equipment.
Paper mending and reinforcing.
Mending methods and tools.
Starch paste and adhesives for paper conservation. Washi - japanese paper.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to outline the basic ideas of the topic, but the problem solving and the application of the theory in practice require more deepening in to the topic. There is a lot to develop in the student’s knowledge and the student’s hand skills require more practice. The student does not master the material phenomena related to the cleaning and/or mending of paper. Neither he/she understand the processes related to the treatment procedures. There is also lack of understanding of decision-making and risk management related to measures. The student is not able to take measures independently enough. Knowledge and application of conservation tools and methods are poor. The student has not achieved the goals of the course and the level of acquired knowledge is low.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The work progresses consistently during the course. The student has a good conception of the basic ideas of the course and he/she is able to apply theory in practical work. The student understands the significance of learned issues for the profession. The student is skilled to carry out cleaning and mending procedures and he/she understands risks related to them. The student implements and applies conservation measures fairly independently. He/she is able to use conservation tools and methods and his/her level of manual skills is good.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The goals set for the course have been achieved in a commendable way. The student understands the things taught in the course excellently and is able to apply them in accordance with the requirements of the profession. The student implements measures wide-ranged using different methods and tools. The student understands and is able to anticipate the cause and effect relationships of the activities related to the treatments. The student has achieved an excellent level both in knowledge and manual skills. The work has been sufficiently independent. The student masters the whole both in theory and practice.
