Objective

The student is able to identify, describe and illustrate in writing and orally the following musical parameters: melody, harmony, rhythm and form. Using relevant repertoire, the student is able to analyze and illustrate the unique features of the music. In addition, the student is able to work independently.

Content

The course contains three components: music theory, aural skills, and rhythm training.

Theory:
- harmonic analysis
- melodic tension in tonal harmony and non-chord tone analysis
- voice-leading of small pieces
- scales
Aural skills:
- melodies in major and minor keys
- bass progressions
- chord progressions containing chromatic tones in major and minor keys
Rhythm:
- the most common complex/odd meters and meter changes
- polyrhythms and polymetric sequences
- tempo changes and metric modulation
- time feel, flow and swing as well as phrasing and articulation in different styles.

Qualifications

Fundamentals of Musicianship for Professional Musicians 1 or equivalent knowledge and skills.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student recognizes, describes and illustrates in writing and orally the following musical parameters from their own area of study: melody, harmony, rhythm and form. The student is able to analyze and illustrate the unique features of the music. In addition, the student is able to work independently.

Further information

This is a compulsory course for all music majors. By completing this course, the student will be prepared to continue with Fundamentals of Musicianship for Professional Musicians 3.
