YKI basic and intermediate level exercises in Finnish 1 (A2.2)Laajuus (2 ECTS)

Objective

On completion of the course, the student will understand ordinary texts related to everyday life and he/she will also be able to acquire new information from short and clear texts, if the topic is familiar. He/she will understand easy and clear speech and conversation on familiar topics. The student will be able to describe briefly familiar things and events and take part in routine conversations. The student will be able to write ordinary everyday life messages and a simple description about past events. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A2.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

This course provides targeted support for the linguistic proficiency required for both the basic level and the intermediate level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI):
- focus on YKI themes: me and my background, environment, society, everyday life, free time and hobbies
- practice in oral and written communication in different situations related to the YKI themes: reading and listening different genres such us simple news, ads and announcements; practice in ordinary service situations for example in the library, post or restaurant; writing a message, e-mail and simple description.
- strengthening basic grammatical structures (such as past tenses) and vocabulary

The combination of courses designed to target the YKI intermediate level proficiency is:
- Finnish 3 (A2.1-A2.2)
- YKI basic and intermediate level exercises in Finnish 1 (A2.2)
- Finnish 4 (A2.2-B1.1)
- YKI intermediate level exercises in Finnish 2 (A2.2-B1)
- Speaking Finnish (A2-B1)
- YKI intermediate level exercises in Finnish 3 (B1)

Qualifications

Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A2.1-A2.2. level, e.g. the courses Finnish 1 (A1.2) and Finnish 2 (A2.1) and Finnish 3 (A2.2).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to
- communicate in simple social encounters and common service situations
- understand at least the main points of ordinary and familiar texts
- describe briefly familiar events and write an understandable message
- complete some exercises on the A2.2 YKI basic level.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
- communicate in basic social encounters and take part in routine conversations, when the topic is familiar
- understand common everyday life texts and also acquire new information from a short and clear text, if the topic is familiar
- understand easy and clear speech and conversation on familiar topics
- write messages in ordinary everyday situations and a very simple and short description about events
- complete some exercises mainly on the A2.2 YKI basic level.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
- apply the learnt matters in common situations and social encounters
- understand common everyday life texts and also acquire new information from a short and clear text, if the topic is familiar
- understand well easy and clear speech and conversation on familiar topics
- write messages in ordinary everyday situations and a simple and short description about events
- show interest in basic features of the Finnish language, culture and customs
- complete YKI basic level exercises consistently on the A2.2 proficiency level.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to
- communicate in simple social encounters and common service situations
- understand at least the main points of ordinary and familiar texts
- describe briefly familiar events and write an understandable message
- complete some exercises on the A2.2 YKI basic level.
