Objective

Students
- are familiar with the objectives and operating environment of Finnish maternity care, the clinical pathways and regulations on reproductive health
- are able to describe the normal progress of low-risk pregnancy and health promotion related to it
- are competent in clinical skills of midwifery during pregnancy
- are able to manage the follow-up of normal pregnancy independently as well as to monitor the wellbeing of foetus in primary health care
- are able to detect complications in pregnancy
- are able to support parents expecting a child in their growth to parenthood, their relationship as a couple, care of the newborn baby and breastfeeding by using family and antenatal counselling methods
- identify ethical and cultural perspectives related to pregnancy

Content

- Objectives and operating environment of maternity care in Finland, clinical pathways and regulations on reproductive health
- Low-risk pregnancy and clinical skills of follow up and care during pregnancy
- Signs of complications in low-risk pregnancy
- Follow-up of the wellbeing of mother, foetus and family as well as recommendations related to it
- Interaction promoting resources of pregnant mothers and their families, parent-child relationship and positive childbirth experience
- Family and antenatal education, parenthood
- Social, community-based and cultural factors related to midwifery skills of individuals, women and families
- Embryology
- Genetics

Qualifications

The student may choose professional studies in midwifery after having successfully completed the theoretical studies included in the professional studies of nursing as well as the clinical practices in the operating environments of medical and surgical nursing, unless otherwise agreed in student´s study plan.
