Objective

Student understands basic principles of animation and is able to apply those in their animations. Student masters process of producing own animations at basic level. Student is able to rig and skin a basic character.

Content

It is possible to carry out the course entirely via distance learning. In the beginning of the course there is a possibility to take part in classroom teaching for a few days. The goal of these voluntary days is to speed up learning at the beginning of the course. Animation process using Maya is covered from very basics and no prior experience of animating is needed. Basic principles of animation are covered and applied via step-by-step exercises. Rigging and skinning a character is covered at basic level. Rigging and skinning is mainly done with free ready-made modular rigging tools. A few techniques for facial rigging are also covered. The software used is available via the web with a free student license from the software producer (Autodesk).

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

To complete the course successfully students have to deliver required materials of compulsory exercises in a timely manner.

Further information

The course is assessed through assignments returned. The main assignment to deliver is to rig and animate a simple character of one´s own choosing. Character can be self-made from scratch.
