Objective

At the end of the course the student is expected to know history of construction materials, some of the most significant historical buildings and their structures. The student knows structures and materials of Finnish buildings during different historical time periods especially blocks of flats.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to:
-list some of the most significant buildings in the history of construction, and explain their structures
-explain structures of Finnish buildings during different historical time periods
-classify mortars of different time periods used in the stone structures
-date old building materials and explain their properties
-list typical structures and materials of Finnish blocks of flats

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to:
-list plenty of the most significant buildings in the history of construction, and explain their structures
-explain structures of Finnish buildings during different historical time periods and know time periods when they were in use
-classify mortars of different time periods used in the stone structures and explain their properties
-date old building materials and explain their properties
-list typical structures and materials of Finnish blocks of flats and their defects

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to:
-list plenty of the most significant buildings in the history of construction, date them and explain their structures
-explain structures of Finnish buildings during different historical time periods and know time periods when they were in use
-classify mortars of different time periods used in the stone structures and explain their properties
-date old building materials and explain their properties
-list typical structures and materials of Finnish blocks of flats, their defects and analyze different repair methods

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to:
-list some of the most significant buildings in the history of construction, and explain their structures
-explain structures of Finnish buildings during different historical time periods
-classify mortars of different time periods used in the stone structures
-date old building materials and explain their properties
-list typical structures and materials of Finnish blocks of flats
