Objective

The student will be able to identify materials and techniques used on painted wooden objects and furniture and identify the deterioration of painted wooden objects and the reasons for it. The student can identify materials and painting techniques typical for certain time period. The student knows the work safety concerning painted surfaces and materials.
The student knows different analyzing methods of painted surfaces. The student can make color layer bar and cross section and knows how to read them. The student will know and is able to select and use the appropriate cleaning, consolidation, filling and retouching materials and techniques for different painted wooden objects and furniture. The student knows different methods and techniques used for removal of overpaint and their specific problems.
The student is able to evaluate the cons and pros of the possible conservation methods and choose the optimal for the safeguarding the object and the information included in it.
Student can use Swedish both in conservation studies and conservation profession. The students acquire the written and oral language skills in the second domestic language that are necessary in their professional field, as required by national legislation (352/2003 8§). The students are able to communicate in Swedish in professional contexts both in Finland and in the other Nordic countries, taking into account the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the communication partners.
The students acquire oral and written language and communication skills that are at least at the B1 level as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They learn to seek information related to their own professional field in various sources and convey information both orally and in writing. During their studies, the students form a positive and realistic view of their language and communicative competence as well as skills and motivation to develop it further.

Content

Course is a coeducation project course with conservation and language studies.

Conservation documentation of painted objects and furniture.
Research and analyzes of the materials in painted furniture and objects.
Analyzes of pigments and binding media.
Consolidation and cleaning of painted wooden surface.
Making of cross sections and paint layer bars and analyzing of them.
Paint removal.
Filling and retouching.
The contents of the course focus on field-specific oral and written exercises related to the following themes: Self-assessing one’s language and communication skills and developing learning strategies; Education and career planning; Organisations, working environments, tasks, processes and tools; Field-related texts; increasing and activating the knowledge of technical terminology; Key interactive communication situations: individual and group communication.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has often been absent from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and rehearsals has been unsatisfactory. The student has problems in acting as a group member. The capacity to formulate relevant problems associated with the work is limited and the student has problems to apply theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning in the rehearsal tasks is weak and the student has many gaps in his/her knowledge.
The student does not work independently and needs a lot of further guidance from the teacher. The student has not given enough attention to the subject, and he/she does not have a clear overall understanding of the subject.
In communication situations related to his/her field the student
• Is able to cope in the most common general and specialised professional communication situations
• Composes simple, though partly incoherent texts. Language errors may impair understanding but do not prevent the delivery of the message
• Participates in simple spoken interaction but often needs help from the conversation partner
• Uses basic general and technical terminology of his/her own field; however, inaccuracy and the influence of other languages may interfere with the delivery of the message.
• Uses basic grammatical structures in a repetitious manner and partly incorrectly
• Pronounces words mostly in a manner that can be understood, although the pronunciation deviates from that of the target language. Furthermore, the slow sentence rhythm makes the delivery of the message difficult.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has taken part in all teaching sessions and projects and his/her activity on the course has been good. The student acts flexibly as a group member.
The studies have proceeded consistently. The student is able to understand the basic topics of the course and is able to apply the theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal tasks is valid and the student understands the causes and effects of one's choices in the tasks.
The student works independently but there is still some need for further guidance from the teacher. The student has given enough attention for the subject and has an overall understanding of the subject.
Succeeds relatively well in daily general and specialised professional discourse
• Composes coherent texts that successfully communicate the intended meaning despite of grammatical errors and insufficient vocabulary
• Takes initiative in familiar professional communication situations
• Uses general and basic technical terminology of his/her own field relatively well. Lapses may occur in the choice of words or grammatical structures, but these do not cause misunderstanding
• Pronounces in a manner that can be understood. Pauses in the sentence rhythm do not cause misunderstandings.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the course objectives fully. The student has taken actively and constructively part in the teaching and the project. The student’s actions enhance the group activities.
The student masters the topics of the course and its prerequisites, and is able to apply theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning in the rehearsal tasks is professional and the student can validate the causes and effects of his/her choices.
The student works independently. The student masters the overall subject in both theory and practice.
In communication situations related to his/her field the student
• Masters even varied and demanding general and specialised professional communication situations
• Produces clear and detailed texts appropriate for the situation
• Is an active participant in professional communication situations and allows for the requirements of the situation. Speaks fluently and effortlessly and takes the conversation partner into account
• Uses technical and general terminology as well as grammatical structures diversely and almost without errors
• Pronounces clearly, with a natural sentence rhythm
