Course unit code: TX00BP06

General information

Credits
10 ECTS

Objective

After completion of the course the student understands essential chemical phenomena and knows the basic principles in inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry. He or she is able to conduct basic calculations concerning the amount of substance, reaction equations and the contents of solutions. The student is also familiar with the basic methods in analytical chemistry. He or she is able to name and sketch formulae for organic compounds and to understand the basic principles of organic reactions. The student also possesses written and oral communication skills in his own study field.

Content

1. Atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonds, amount of substance, reactions and states of matter
2. Oxidation and reduction, chemical equilibrium
3. Concepts of acids and bases and their applications, pH
4. Introduction to analytical chemistry, estimation of experimental uncertainty
5. Structure, naming and reaction types of organic compounds
6. Research and project reporting using references
7. Oral presentation on the topic of a research report
8. Formulation of documents related to a job application

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
- knows the basic concepts of chemistry, is able to conduct basic calculations and shows that he or she has reached the goals of core competence
- is able to write understandable texts on the basis of given instructions. When given necessary supervision, he or she is capable of finding relevant knowledge in his or her own field as well as of using it in his or her reports. He or she takes part in situations where performance and interaction skills are needed.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student:
- has become familiar with the concepts and principles of chemistry. He or she is able to explain and interpret chemical formulae and equations related to chemical phenomena. He or she also knows how to assess the uncertainty of experimental results and how to report them in a proper way, e.g. with the correct accuracy.
- is able to write fluent and correct text in accordance with given recommendations in his or her own field. He or she knows how to find information and knowledge in his or her study field and how to critically use and combine it. He or she is able to communicate in an illustrative and interesting way and to use visual equipment to support his or her communication.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
- can use basic concepts and knowledge logically and solve applied exercises of chemistry related to his or her study field
- is able to write completed texts in his or her professional field and to modify them to meet the needs of the target group. He or she is able to find information in his or her field in a versatile and independent way as well as to critically compare and combine information from different sources. He or she is capable of communicating and presenting convincingly and impressively.
