Medical Studies in Prosthetics and Orthotics 1Laajuus (3 ECTS)
Course unit code: SA00BB29
General information
- Credits
- 3 ECTS
Objective
Pathophysiology, 1cr
The pathophysiology unit serves as an introduction to all medical units.
Students recognise the basic factors affecting the pathophysiology of traumas, injuries and the most common illnesses. They learn to recognise the significance of these factors affecting structural and functional cellular and tissue changes as part of client/patient’s problems. Students also acquaint themselves with the main features of the healing process from the perspective of pathophysiology.
Gerontology and geriatrics, 1 cr
Students familiarise themselves with the age-related changes at tissue and organ level. They are aware of the most common risk factors and prevention of illnesses as well as options for care of the elderly. Students are familiar with the underlying physical and mental factors of the illnesses of the ageing population affecting their functional ability and know how to acknowledge these factors as part of the planning and implementation of prosthetics and orthotics.
Internal medicine, 1 cr
Students are familiar with the risk factors, development and natural progression of the most common respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases prevalent in Finland. They become familiar with the examination and treatment protocols used in internal medicine in Finland. Students are aware of the challenges related to internal medicine in prosthetics and orthotics.
Content
Pathophysiology, 1cr
