Objective
Students describe prosthetic and orthotic services as part of the Finnish social and health care system. Students can analyse the tasks and functions of the prosthetic and orthotic services from the perspective of the individual, community and society.
Students describe the core competence areas and central concepts of prosthetics and orthotics. Students familiarise themselves with the professional activities of prosthetists and orthotists and other professionals in various operating environments. Students describe the laws, decrees and regulations guiding their work and act accordingly. Students identify different areas of quality and effective service in prosthetics and orthotics and are committed to their development as part of their professional development.
Students describe the major development needs of prosthetic and orthotic services from the perspective of the individual, community and society.
Content
The service system of prosthetics and orthotics. Laws and quality recommendations concerning prostheses and orthoses. Knowledge and value foundation of prosthetics and orthotics. History and future challenges of prosthetics and orthotics. Prosthetic and orthotic services and operating environments. Core competence areas of prosthetics and orthotics. Technical and technological development of prosthetics and orthotics in Finland and abroad. Subareas of quality prosthetics and orthotics. Documentation. National and international networks.
The course includes a work placement worth 3 credits: Introduction to the work of prosthetists and orthotists

Students use the appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They recognise the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
