Objective

Students command the main conventions and norms of expository writing. They know how to find, analyse and distribute information and to deepen their knowledge of their professional field. Students know how to document their professional development and highlight their competence in writing, as well as visually and orally. Students are able to behave appropriately and adeptly in communication and interaction situations in working life.

Content

Language skills (grammar, usage and style), introduction to information search, referencing, writing expository texts. Text types relating to studies and the field of study, such as report, essay, announcement, press release and review. Documentation of your own professional competence, e.g., in the form of a portfolio. Expository oral communication and using audio visual aids for a presentation.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students

1) are capable of assessing their communication and receiving feedback

2) are able to create texts and oral presentations relevant in their work community adhering to the instructions in the desired format

3) are able to interact appropriately in the work community and how to present and justify their views

4) are able to acquire information when assisted and to use the information according to the given instructions

5) know some of the work and trade related text types and communication situations and the relevan guidelines for language use.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students

1) are capable of analyzing and assessing their communication and formulating development goals

2) are able to make good use of the strengths indicated in the feedback and to develop other areas of competence

3) are able to create trade-related texts and oral presentations following the given guidelines and samples and use different communication channels, texts types and modes of expressions appropriately

4) are able to acquire information critically and present content adhering to the standards of the communication situation and use proper, situation appropriate language, style and structures in their communication

5) are able to communicate interactively and elicit interaction in a situation-appropriate way.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students

1) are able to develop their Finnish language and communication skills as part of their professional competence and they are able to communicate appropriately, creatively and originally

2) are able to use communication channels, modes and text types creatively and appropriately and adjust their language use to the communication situation and the medium

3) are able to acquire information independently and critically in order to generate new information and views

4) are able to use the language and various modes of expression creatively, adhering to the conventions and standards of their trade

5) are able to use situation-appropriate language with excellent style and structures.
