Objective

The student knows the principles of environmental legislation in the EU and national level. The student is able to search information from the different environmental rules and legislations. The student understands the process of environmental permit procedures and environmental impact assessment. After this course the student may apply his/her knowledge in the environmental permit application process. The student knows the principles of different emission limit units, basic calculations in converting and emission monitoring practices (process, emission and environmental impact assessment). The student knows the procedure of the environmental impact assessment. The student is familiar with the principles of the best available techniques in different industry areas as well as knows how to search information on IPPC.

The course includes both theory and PC exercise lectures.

Content

Aspect of regular and exceptional emissions, and concept of emission and guide limit values. Basis of emission calculations and converting. EU decision making, EU environmental legislation and legislation in national level. Principles of emission control and monitoring. Environmental permit system and Environmental Impact Assessment. Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control References (IPPC).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows the principles of basic emission calculation and unit converting (aspects of limit and guide values). Environmental legislation decision making in EU, terms of EU directives and national legislations. Content of Environmental Permit Application. Practices of emission estimation and monitoring. Procedures of EIA, BAT and IPPC.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Evaluation of emission rate and emission calculations related on different environmental guide and limit values.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Knowledge of process, emission and environmental impact monitoring/measurements. Applying knowledge to practice.
