General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

The student knows cell structures including organelles. S/he has an understanding of cell adhesions and junctions as well as extracellular structures. S/he understands signal transduction mechanisms. The student understands principles of cell proliferation, stem cell and cancer cell biology.

Content

1. Animal cell structure (organelles, cytoskeleton), growth and formation of tissue.
2. Cell adhesions and cell signaling.
3. Stem cells, proliferation and cancer cells

Qualifications

TX00AD19 Biomolecules

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student is able to name cell organelles and understands their function.
2. The student understands how cells are attached with each other and with ECM. He/she recognizes different tissue types.
3. The student can describe the proliferation process of a normal cell and cell death

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student knows the functions of cell organelles and understands their role in a variety of cellular functions. S/he understands how cell organelles function under the different stages of cell cycle.
2. The student can name different cell adhesion types and describe the basics of cell signaling mechanism.
3. The student is familiar with the stem cell concepts and understands how cancer cells are developed. S/he understands how cancer metastases. S/he can describe research applications regarding cell biology.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student understands how certain organelle deficits influence the cellular functions and what kind of disease the defective function may cause.
2. The student understands how the cell signaling mechanisms control the organs and tissues. He/she understands how cell signaling mechanisms may be regulated.
3. He/she can describe the different stages of apoptosis and necrosis. He/she understands the role of apoptosis during the individual development, as well as a valuable research tool.
