Course unit code: TF00AA98
General information
- Credits
- 4 ECTS
Objective
The student is familiar with the appearance of both useful and harmful microbes in different environments; food, human body, nature and industrial environments. He/she knows the growth regulating mechanisms and how some industrial microbes can be utilized.
Content
1. Appearance of microorganisms in food and in the human body
2. Microbial communities in nature and microbes used in environmental engineering
3. Use of industrial microorganisms
Qualifications
Microbiology I
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. Appearance of microorganisms in food and in the human body. The student can name the most important microbes for food production, some food spoilage microbes and the most important groups of microbes in the human digestive system. He/she can perform microbiological analysis with the help of tutorial instructions
2. Microbial communities in nature and microbes used in environmental engineering. The student can briefly describe the role of microbes in the main element cycles on earth and also the microbes´ role in some environmental engineering processes
3. Use of industrial microorganisms. The student can list some important groups of microbes used in industrial biotechnical production
Assessment criteria, good (3)
1. Appearance of microorganisms in food and in the human body. The student knows the most important characteristics and qualities of some microbes used in food production processes and likewise for some food spoilage microbes. He/she can perform microbial analysis independently based on written instructions and is able to report the main sources of errors
2. Microbial communities in nature and microbes used in environmental engineering. The student can describe the most important factors effecting microbial growth in environmental engineering processes
3. Use of industrial microorganisms. The student knows some of the most important biotechnical industrial groups of microorganisms, their characteristics and qualities and how they are used in the process
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
1. Appearance of microorganisms in food and in the human body. The student knows also properties of some rare microbes in food. He/she can independently find information about microbes and is able to outline an experimental design for a microbial analysis.
2. Microbial communities in nature and microbes used in environmental engineering. The student knows the factors having a significant influence on the microbial action in some environmental engineering processes
3. Use of industrial microorganisms. The student knows the growth requirements for some microbes used in industrial processes and how the processes can be regulated
