Objective
Students identify main events in the history of midwifery and midwifery education and know how to evaluate their significance to the work of midwives today and in future. They can determine key competence and expertise of midwifery as well as its value and knowledge foundation. Students are aware of the national and international regulations directing midwives’ work and education as well as assess their significance to midwives’ work and actions.
Students understand what independent midwifery work means; they know how to define the content of Finnish midwifery work and can compare it internationally.
Students are able to explain the significance of the role of women in society in different cultures as well as the significance of the work and actions of midwives for supporting women and families. Students can define the concepts of sexuality and gender and the relation between them.
Students know what P and LI levels mean in the promotion of sexual health and the work of midwives.
Students know how to determine midwives’ area of work in the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.

History and future prospects of midwifery and midwifery education

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Students recognise the main historical events related to midwifery and midwifery education. Students identify the main national and international regulations guiding midwives’ work. They identify ethical aspects of midwifery. Students know the significance of evidence-based practice in midwifery. Students are able to define the concepts of sexuality and gender and the relation between them. They know what is meant by sexual and reproductive rights. Students know what the P ad LI levels mean in the promotion of sexual health. They can define midwives’ area of work in the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students are familiar with the main historical events related to midwifery and midwifery education as well as know how to evaluate the significance of history to midwifery today. Students identify the national and international regulations directing midwifery. Students identify issues related to professional ethics present in midwifery and consider ethical questions by case examples. Students understand the significance of evidence-based nursing to midwifery.
Students can define the concepts of sexuality and gender as well as the relation between them. Students know what is meant by sexual and reproductive rights and understand their significance. Students know what P and L1 levels mean in the promotion of sexual health and the work of midwives. Students can determine midwives’ area of work in the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.

Students identify issues related to professional ethics present in midwifery and can evaluate their significance to midwives’ work. Students understand the significance of evidence-based nursing to midwifery and its development.

Students know what is meant by sexual and reproductive rights and understand their significance from the perspective of midwifery. Students know what P and L1 levels mean in the promotion of sexual health and midwives’ work. Students can determine and justify midwives’ area of work in the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.
