Objective

Students are able to analyse their ethical thinking and actions as well as understand their significance to nursing. They understand the value foundation of social and health care and the ethical decision-making process and are able to apply them to nursing.
Students can assess the normal ageing process as well as promote the functional capacity of the elderly and prevent health risks. Students can care for an elderly client or patient by applying the multiscientific knowledge foundation of gerontological nursing. They are able to direct and coordinate the care and services in diverse operating environments. Students are able to act in multiprofessional work groups in a client/patient-oriented way in cooperation with relatives and others participating in the care. Students know how to utilise evidence-based gerontological nursing. They adopt a positive attitude towards the elderly clients/patients and act responsibly in gerontological nursing.

Nursing ethics and ethical decision-making
Gerontological nursing in diverse operating environments
Laws, acts and recommendations concerning gerontological nursing
Concept of old age and ageing process
Evaluation and promotion of functional capacity and health of the elderly
Knowledge foundation and special features of gerontological nursing
Hospice care, use of intoxicants, elder abuse
Special features of the medication for the elderly
Nursing of persons suffering from memory disorders and dementia
Service counselling
Care and service plan
Cooperation with relatives and significant others
Ethical questions on gerontological nursing

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students can describe their professional values and understand their connection to nursing practice.
Students understand the value foundation of social and health care and the ethical decision-making process as well as can apply them to nursing.
Students can evaluate the normal ageing process, promote the functional capacity and health of the elderly as well as prevent health risks.
Students can apply the multiscientific knowledge foundation of gerontological nursing.
Students can plan and implement multiprofessional care and services of the elderly in diverse operating environments.
Students adopt a professional attitude towards clients/patients of old age and work responsibly in gerontological nursing.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students can evaluate and justify their professional code of conduct and its significance to nursing.
Students can evaluate the implementation of the value foundation of social and health care as well as the ethical decision-making process to nursing.
Students can apply knowledge on the ageing process, promotion of the functional capacity and health of the elderly and prevention of health risks.
Students can analyse the multiscientific knowledge foundation of gerontological nursing.
Students can direct and coordinate the multiprofessional care and services of the elderly in diverse operating environments.
Students can analyse their actions and attitudes towards gerontological nursing.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students can analyse and develop their own ethical actions and those of their work community
based on evidence.
Students can evaluate the implementation of the value foundation of social and health care and the ethical decision-making process based on evidence in diverse operating environments.
Students can interpret and measure the normal ageing process, the functional capacity of the elderly as well as health and health risks.
Students can draw conclusions on the multiscientific knowledge foundation of gerontological nursing.
Students can evaluate and reorganise multiprofessional care and services of the elderly in diverse operating environments.
Students adopt a positive attitude towards gerontological nursing and its development.
