Objective

The student will understand the operational principles of computing and be familiar with the computerised study environment, its use and the possibilities it offers. The student will be familiar with the basic concepts of computing, such as data, file formats, directory structures, coding character sets, local area networks (LANs) and the Internet, major parts of a computer and the operation of the parts, programme types and operating systems. On completion of the course the student will know how to use a PC for the studies at a university of applied sciences, and how to use the major tool programmes. The student will also be able to work in data networks and see to the requirements of data security.

The equipment and LAN – data management in the network of the university of applied sciences
Data security and protection
Basic concepts of computing and information technology
Word processing and document standards
Introduction to spreadsheet calculation
Introduction to graphics programmes and image processing
The Internet as a source of information and medium of communications (www publishing, e-mail, social media and search technique)
Technical capabilities for e-learning
Topical issues in information technology

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to use the basic software and is able to repeat the tasks listed in Learning outcomes. The student completes assignments satisfactorily.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to apply the learned skills to new similar tasks. The student completes assignments satisfactorily and on time.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the requirements above, the student is interested in enhancing the productivity of computing, and is able to invent new ways to complete the given assignments as well as give reasons for his or her choices. The assignments are completed independently and in a professional manner.
