Physics Laboratory CourseLaajuus (3 ECTS)
Course unit code: TY00AA12
General information
- Credits
- 3 ECTS
Objective
On completion of the course the student will be able to measure quantities related to engineering and to further process the results. The student will be able to solve indirectly measurable quantities by using measurement results. The student recognizes the effect of the uncertainty of the measured quantities on the calculated quantities.
Content
Determination and analysis of the dynamic and static qualities of phenomena measured in various experimental projects utilizing sensor applications that produce an electrical signal together with computer based measuring systems. The changes in the experimental phenomenon can be monitored and analysed in real time through a graphic user interface. The tools used to analyse the stream of measurements in real time are interactive and open.
Calibration and accuracy of sensors, and computer-based measuring system
Spring constant, oscillation of springs, and gravitational acceleration
Elastic modulus for various materials
Measuring friction constants with sensors for acceleration and force
Harmonic oscillation
Dynamic orbit
Calorimetric measurements
Determination of surface tension
Capacitor and permittivity of material
RC circuits or properties of diodes
Electro-magnetic induction
Spectrometer, grating, prism and refraction
Sound waves and analysis of sound signal
Thermal conductivity
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student is able to perform the measurements and related calculations with the help of the instructions given. The student understands that the uncertainty of measurement leads to uncertainty in the calculated quantity.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student understands the principle of sensibility analysis in calculations of uncertainty. The student is able to compare the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of measurement.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is able to form the equations needed to calculate the uncertainty of a quantity independently. The student understands the dependencies between different quantities and the limitations in measuring them.
