Objective

The student is capable to analyze and solve problems related to science and technology applying the laws, principles and quantities of physics. He/she is capable of using physical quantities, units, notation and terminology in English. He/she understands the conservation laws and the main interactions in nature. The student is well informed about the current understanding of the structure of the matter. He/she has the capability to realize connections between the basic physical phenomena and their applications in technological innovations, systems or even in equipment. He/she has the ability to find out information, knowledge and facts from various type sources and utilize them with analytical and critical methods. The student has the capacity to find out and analyze information, knowledge and facts together with other students and use it as a group of expert does. He/she has also the capacity to present and report difficult issues in an understandable way for different types of audience. The student can perform these objectives in a classroom or a laboratory type of a learning environment.

Content

Physics as an exact and experimental science.
Scales in physics and the validity of physics as a description of nature and the foundation of technological innovations.
Great ideas and principles, conservation laws and the main interactions in physics.
The structure of matter according to the standard model.
Application work, connections between the basic physical phenomena and their applications in technological inventions, systems or even equipment.
Case studies about the above mentioned themes in the field of modern technology such as information technology, telecommunications, microelectronics and nanotechnology.

Qualifications

Knowledge covering the content of courses "FTO", "Mekaniikka ja lämpöopin perusteet" , "Sähköoppi" ja ”Magnetismi” .

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student understands the role of physics as an exact and experimental science. He/she has the ability to outline connections between basic physical phenomena and technological evolution as well as applications. He/she has an understanding about the standard model related to the structure of matter. The student is able to report and explain these issues to other students.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to above mentioned, the student is able to understand and apply the role basic phenomena in more complicated and demanding technological applications. He/she expresses ability to find out new knowledge and information together with other students and is capable to utilize it in more complicated situations. He/she is able together with other students to report and present demanding and difficult issues in a simple and interesting manner to other students.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the lower level criteria, the student is capable to solve also demanding problems and cases where the capability to connect methods and concepts from several fields is required. He/she is able to apply the new knowledge together with other students for new type of problems. He/she is able to report and present issues in a professional manner, clearly, logically and based on facts, with methods telling about a deeper understanding.
