Objective

The student is expected to
- know the types of impurities on the surfaces and is able to select the proper cleaning methods
- know different coating methods and is able to select the proper method and equipments
- know essential contents of surface treatment standards
- manage the surface treatment processes
- know the principles of quakity control and the main inspection methods
be able to take into account safety and environmental factors

- manage the most common painting methods
- analyse the painted surfaces
- produce coatings by electroplating
- analyse the properties of metal coatings

The objectives of surface treatment
The state of surfaces, types of impurities
The pretreatment methods of different substrate materials and surfaces
Paints and the properties of different paints
Application methods of paints
Testing of paints and painted surfaces
Painting shops and the equipments required
Coating and coating methods of metal surfaces (electropalating, anodizing, hot dip zinc coating, thermal spraying, PVD ja CVD-coating etc)
Surface treatment standards, quality control, inspections ja measurements

Typical properties of substrates to be coated
The removal of different impurities (loose dirty, water soluble salts, organic greases and oils, inorganic rusts and mill scales) from the surfaces
Composition of paints depending on the use and factors affecting on the paint properties
Conversion coating, mechanical and chemical finishing of metal surfaces
Enamaling
