Objective

Student gets basic understanding about wireless communications networks and their operation. He/she knows fundamental limitations for wireless information transmission and characteristics of wireless transmission channels.

Student will be able to estimate feasibility of wireless transmission methods, systems and media for a given communication demand.

• Theoretical maximum data rate over a channel with given bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio
• Overwiev of wiress communications and their applications

• Cellular system generations
• GSM/DCS1800 network architecture and operation principles
• GSM/DCS1800 data services, GPRS and EDGE
• Cordless telephones (DECT) and Bluetooth applications and characteristics
• Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) networks and TETRA
• UMTS/IMT2000 and future mobile communication systems
• Operation principle of spread spectrum systems, such as CDMA
