Objective

Students are familiar with diseases of the eye and its accessory organs that are most significant in terms of an Optometrist's work and are capable of identifying changes caused by major ocular diseases in eye examinations, recognising the key symptoms of these. They are familiar with the significance of ocular diseases to visual acuity, in particular the effects of such diseases on image formation, and they understand the effects of general diseases central to ocular and visual functions on the vision system. Students are capable of assessing when a condition requires a medical examination and medical treatment on the basis of the case history, external examination of the eye and vision examination.
Students acquaint themselves with the general concepts and principles of pharmacology and familiarise themselves with key drug groups and, in more detail, with eye medications and diagnostic eye preparations. Students are aware of regulations and legislation governing the use of pharmaceuticals.
Students are capable to give firs aid in case of ocular accidents.

Content

Ocular diseases, mechanisms and symptoms of ocular diseases; corneal diseases, conjunctival diseases, diseases of the lacrimal apparatus and tear film, eyelid diseases, iris diseases, lens diseases, ciliary diseases, accommodation disorders, glaucoma, vitreous diseases, retinal diseases, optic nerve and visual pathway diseases, strabismus, eye injuries, eye tumours; eye surgery, eye genetics, eye immunology; general diseases and the eye, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, thyroid diseases, rheumatic diseases, neurological diseases, skin diseases, nutritional disorders.
General pharmacological principles, chemical transmitters and receptors, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, side effects; legislation and rights of disposal.
Ocular pharmacology: autonomic nervous system in the eye, drug forms, factors influencing choice of medication, cycloplegics, mydriatics, miotics, local anaesthetics, diagnostic staining agents, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial drugs, antiglaucoma drugs, agents used to moisten the eyes, contact lens fluids, side effects of systemic drugs in the vision system.
