Objective

- The student will be familiar with demands of both written and oral expert communication and the basic data acquisition.
- The student will be able to write and create a presentation about her/his own field.
- The student will be trained to express her/him self in various media for wider audience (FB, blog, twitter, hand-outs regarding conservation and cultural heritage, expert statements, reports and articles).
- The student will be able to evaluate her/his competence and give structured feedback to others.
- The student will be able to act appropriately in both working life and entrepreneurship-related communication situations.
- The student will understand the importance of interpersonal communication and the atmosphere at the work place for working motivation.
- The student will take the requirements of the recipient, situation and field into account, and be able to communicate in analysed, understandable and convincing way.
- The student will be willing to develop her/his Finnish and communication skills as part of her/his professional ability.

Content

- Oral, verbal, and non-verbal communication
- Expert and group communication: basic communication situations in working life, interpersonal communication situations, demands of convincing communication and argumentation skills
- FB, blog, Twitter, etc. regarding cultural heritage and conservation, hand-outs, expert statements, reports, and articles
- Knowledge acquisition and structuring skills

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has a lot of absences from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and learning assignments is unsatisfactory. The student should improve her/his group working skills. The student will identify the elements of the process of communication and the partners of communication. She/he can make simple written messages and participate in interactive situations, but in spite of instruction the student has difficulties in data acquisition and their critical processing.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has taken part to all teaching sessions and learning assignments and the activity during the course is good. The student acts flexibly as a group member. The student can evaluate his/her own communication skills and form communicative development goals. The student is goal-oriented in interactive situations and is familiar with the role of internal and external communication of the community. He/she listens, observes and interprets messages appropriately. The student communicates as an expert in a structured, understandable and interesting way and targets messages to the recipient according to the situation. The student can justify his/her views.
The student can acquire information on his/her own field of study and can use it critically. The student is able to prepare a goal-oriented written, oral or visual presentation for the target audience. The student takes advantage of his/her knowledge on text types and language.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The course objectives have been achieved in a competent manner. The student has participated actively and constructively in the teaching and learning assignments. The student has acted as group member encouragingly and strengthening teamwork. The student is willing and able to develop his/her Finnish language and communication skills as a part of her/his expertise and can communicate in a meaningful, creative, and personal way. The student can use means of communication in a creative and appropriate way and takes advantage of different channels and tools. The student argues her/his point with skill and shows, shares, and develops her/his expertise in the community. The student retrieves information independently and competently in order to produce new knowledge or new perspectives. The student uses language creatively and according to field practices.

Further information

The course is implemented as a project-based learning. The starting point is learning through practical work. Student her-/himself has a role as an investigative learner.
