Conservation of Painted and Surface Treated WoodLaajuus (10 cr)

Objective

The student is familiar with the history and techniques of painted wood-based art (paintings and polychrome sculptures). The student is familiar with the materials of wood-based objects, surface treatments, manufacturing history and technology, conservation techniques and materials.
The student is able to initially analyse and map the materials of the object non-destructively as well as by taking samples and analysing them, using different analysis methods and equipment.
The student is able to document the object in writing and photographically, including analytical photography methods, according to the requirements.
The student is able to make a conservation plan, based on analysis and documentation and conserve the object, taking into account ethical and aesthetic principles as well as the material requirements for conservation.
The student is able to conserve an object or objects in practice, independently or as part of a group, according to an approved conservation plan and justify the chosen conservation methods and materials based on documentation and research of the object.

Content

Thorough written and photographic documentation of the object to be conserved, including documentation and material analyses performed by analytical photographic methods and microscopy, and their interpretations prior to conservation.
Choices of materials and methods, ethical and aesthetic aspects of conservation, related to particular object.
Damage mechanisms, previous storage and display conditions of objects before and after conservation.
Other aspects, related to the history and future use or presentation of the object and the owner's feedback / wishes obtained through working life connections.
Various conservation measures such as cleaning, paint and ground layer fixing and consolidation, filling and retouching.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to outline the basic concepts of painted wooden art objects (panel paintings, icons, and polychrome sculptures) and has a basic knowledge of related theory, documentation techniques, analytical techniques, materials and working methods. The student masters the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student understands the necessary theoretical and applied principles related to the topic. The student is able to acquire some information independently. The student has difficulties in interpreting the acquired knowledge and choosing suitable working methods and materials. The student has difficulty justifying the choices made. Practical work is not independent enough and there are shortcomings in the end-result. The student has difficulty acting as a group member in an encouraging and group-strengthening way

The student understands well the concepts of painted wooden art objects (panel paintings, icons, and polychrome sculptures) and is well acquainted with the related theory, documentation techniques, analytical techniques, materials, and working methods. The student demonstrates a good theoretical and applied knowledge. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly, and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student understands well the whole in both theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The end-result of the practical work is at a good level. The work has been sufficiently independent. The student is able to acquire information independently and is able to critically analyse this information. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.

The student masters the concepts of painted wooden art objects (panel paintings, icons, and polychrome sculptures) and is very familiar with the related theory, documentation techniques, analytical techniques, materials, and working methods. The student has reached an excellent level of knowledge and skills. The student demonstrates excellent knowledge of theoretical and applied knowledge and is able to apply what he or she has learned well. The student is able to work largely independently on both written and skill-based assignments. The student is able to acquire information independently and to analyse and apply information. The student participates in the discussion with arguments using the concepts of the field. The student is able to justify the choices he / she has made expertly, and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The end-result of the practical work is very good. The student works consistently, showing initiative and creative problem-solving ability. As a member of the group, the student acts to encourage and strengthen the work of the group.
