Objective

The student
• recognises the significance of cytological tests in the diagnostics of diseases and in the treatment of patients
• identifies different cell types based on histological cell morphology and can distinguish between normal and atypical cells in key sample types according to the criteria of malignancy
• is able to justify the significance of clinical cytology tests in treating patients, diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment
• is familiar with basic cytological tests and their indications
• knows how to perform these tests
• is able to explain the role of different working phases as part of high-quality treatment.

Content

• The principles of working in a pathology laboratory: current legislation and occupational safety, quality management, knowledge of information technology
• Gynecological and general cytological methods
• Cytological preparation techniques
• Papanicolaou staining and other basic staining in cytology
• Normal cellularity of key cell types (gynecological, urine, lung and sputum samples)
• General criteria of malignancy.
• Identification of typical gynecological findings in a Pap smear under the Bethesda system
• Pap classes
• Paris System for urine cytology

Qualifications

Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology, Clinical Immunology Examinations, Pre-analytics 1 & 2, Physics in Laboratory Work, Mathematics in Laboratory Work, Methods in Laboratory Work, Clinical Practice 1 at Health Care Laboratories, Cell Biology.
