Objective
The student knows the reasons for transfemoral amputation and hip disarticulation and the various technical methods of conducting these amputations, understands the customer’s activity classification and can apply this knowledge to the manufacturing of a transfemoral prosthesis and hip prosthesis. The student can justify the need for a prosthetic solution from the user’s perspective and explain its impact on the user’s functional capacity. The student knows how to measure a transtibial prosthesis and the basics of the modelling process using traditional as well as CAD methods. They can manufacture a transfemoral prosthesis under guidance, as well as align and fit it on the client. The student knows how to apply their knowledge of materials and prosthetic components in the manufacturing process and to develop their manual skills. They are able to evaluate the client’s functional capacity and the usability of a prosthesis and to guide the client in the use of a prosthesis. They understand the importance of multidisciplinary work and are able to work as part of a team.

The course deals with the principles of sustainability, which are applied in the selection of materials, taking into consideration their recyclability, durability and ethical production, as well as in the utilisation of innovations and technology, while promoting social responsibility in health care.
