The curriculum of the Degree Program in Design is a knowledge-based. It is divided into the studies of the University of Applied Sciences, core requirement studies of the degree program and professional studies.

The curriculum has been developed in co-operation with partners in business and industry and the students to meet the future requirements in the field of design and to incorporate comprehensive design thinking and its use in multi-disciplinary collaboration. The curriculum is based on the following aspects: mastering sustainable design, user-centered design, production and technology, design process, visual arts as well as developing skills in service design and building one´s professional identity.

Development

Many contributed to the development of the curriculum: the entire staff of the Degree Programme of Design with their expertise in different areas as well as representatives of business and industry, alumni and students. The objective was to create a curriculum that emphasises competence-based education and practical relevance and supports comprehensive design thinking in the degree programme. Vocational Consulting Committee was also consulted on the new curriculum. In the year 2020, the Degree Programme of Design expanded to include Digital Design, Visual Communication Design and 3D Animation and Visualization.

Objective

The learning outcomes of the degree are grounded on the mastery of sustainable design, production and technology, the design process, visual and user-centred design and on the building of professional identity and service design skills.

Description

Visual Communications students study the design of both printed and electronic media. The training consists of theory in visual expression and thinking, information about production processes in the graphic industry, the software used in making them, practical work in arts subjects and applied professional subjects, and basic information about commercial operations. Students choose to specialize in either Graphic Design or Motion Graphics. In both choices, the student gets the basic skills of graphic design and the ability to design and implement marketing communication. Upon graduation, the students can find employment in various visual communication positions, for example as graphic designer, art director (AD or junior AD), visual user interface designer, concept artist, illustrator, game artist or designer of business graphics. Workplace may be in design or communication agency, companies’ communications departments, game industry, media companies or in the advertising business.
