Descriptions
The aim of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Bachelor's Degree Programme in Physiotherapy is to educate competent and innovative physiotherapists who develop their own work for the evolving and unforeseen needs of changing society. Topical issues challenge professionals to continuous learning and renewing of their methods. Based on the needs of social and health care and rehabilitation services, the programme emphasises broad-based competences and the ability to multidisciplinary and multiprofessional cooperation with clients and people close to them. Studying in the physiotherapy degree programme requires the student to be active, responsible, able to work in a group and to assess and develop one's own competence.
The studies begin in English without the Finnish language proficiency requirement and Finnish language skills will be acquired through self-study and on-the-job learning as the studies progress. In the early stages of physiotherapy education, the students learn the basics of physiotherapy: cooperation and interaction with the client, guiding the client, functional capacity and its assessment, the structure and functioning of the human body, biomechanics of movement, motor learning and therapeutic exercises. As the programme progresses, professional competence deepens, and the students learn to assess and promote functional capacity and client agency of different client groups. At the final stages of the studies, the emphasis is on research, development and innovation skills. In addition, the students gain competence in physiotherapy management and entrepreneurship. The curriculum consists of studies related to the degree programme and the sector, Finnish language studies (levels 1-4), multidisciplinary innovation studies (MINNO), thesis studies and Profile Studies for Working Life Skills, which include the Finnish 4 course. If the student's language of education is Finnish or Swedish, he or she will take the following courses instead of the 20 ECTS of Finnish in the English curriculum: Client and Patient Orientation 2 ECTS, Swedish at Work 3 ECTS, Professional Communication and English 5 ECTS, Profile Studies in Working Life Skills 5 ECTS and Metropolia’s Elective Modules 5 ECTS.
The programme also includes practical training that promotes professional skills. This inlcudes workshops, practice-based lectures, projects and clinical practice in various learning environments of the working life partners. The studies of the Degree Programme in Physiotherapy take place at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Myllypuro campus, where diverse learning environments and collaborating with working life partners and clients provide opportunities for joint multidisciplinary learning during the studies. The studies can also take place in the multidisciplinary projects of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences innovation hubs. During their studies, the students can apply for international student exchange. International experience is also gained from studies, projects and joint activities with foreign exchange students. Personal choices and the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) contribute to the planning of a Personal Study Plan (PSP). The PSP is adjusted as the studies progress, if necessary.
The assessment framework used in the curriculum is attached.
Development
The curriculum of the Bachelor of Health Care Degree Programme in Physiotherapy is based on general and profession-specific competencies that describe the competence and professional skills of the graduating physiotherapist. The competencies have been defined at national and international level, including the European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education (ENPHE) and the World Physiotherapy Association's description of the framework of physiotherapy education. At the national level, the curriculum development has been guided by the description of core competences in physiotherapy of the Finnish Association of Physiotherapists, the policies of the Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Arene and the descriptions of the common competences of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences degrees. The content and implementation of the curriculum are continuously developed, considering the changing needs of working life and anticipating future needs.
