Objective

The student knows the most important concepts and mechanisms of metabolic processes, the organization of reactions and the main mechanisms of metabolism including the principles and functions of enzymes. S/he is able to explain the main energy metabolism reactions; the significance of carbohydrates and fats and the flow of respiration.

The student masters basic genetic engineering techniques at a theoretical and practical level. The student is able to isolate, purify and characterize nucleic acids from different starting materials. S/he understands DNA modification, vector base structure, and DNA transport modes in the host cell. S/he is able to describe PCR and sequencing techniques. The student understands the importance of DNA analysis in individual identification and GMO analyzes. The student knows the basic principles of legislation for genetic engineering and can discuss ethical issues connected to the aim.

The student knows the most critical analytical methods in biochemistry and genetic engineering.

Content

The function of enzymes and their kinetics, energy metabolism

Cloning methods and vector structures in DNA technology. DNA amplification- and sequencing methods. Ethical issues and Finnish law and regulation regarding gene technology
